Abingdon Wine Estate

Winery Description

Location and History

Abingdon Wine Estate is nestled in the picturesque KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, showcasing the natural beauty of the region. At an altitude of 1140 meters above sea level, the estate spans 4 hectares of vineyards, where all wines are produced exclusively from 100% Abingdon grapes. This family-run estate came into the Smorthwaite family in 2000, and after purchasing the land, the first vines were planted in 2004. With a commitment to quality and sustainability, Abingdon is the first farm in KZN to produce certified estate wines, reflecting the unique terroir characterized by Clovelly and Griffon soils. The cool climate combined with the estate’s high altitude allows for the cultivation of a variety of grape cultivars such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and more. The Smorthwaite family manages the estate with hands-on involvement in viticulture and winemaking, ensuring that each bottle reflects their passion and dedication.
