Allesverloren
Winery Description
Location and History
Nestled in the picturesque Riebeek Valley, Allesverloren Wine Estate benefits from the unique meso-climates of the region, which contribute to the complex flavors of its wines. The vineyards extend up the slopes of the Kasteelberg mountain, thriving in tough mountainous soil, a mixture of Table Mountain sandstone and Malmesbury shale. The winery's establishment dates back to between 1696 and 1704, when it was awarded to a widow among the early settlers in the Swartland. The name Allesverloren, meaning 'all is lost,' originates from a dramatic incident in 1704 when the family's home was set ablaze. Over the years, the estate has expanded to encompass 227 hectares, cultivating a reputation for quality wines that reflects the Malan family's dedication, spanning five generations in the winemaking tradition. Notably, the arrival of Daniël Francois Malan in 1872 marked a pivotal shift in the estate's focus from wheat farming to viniculture, paving the way for the production of esteemed port-style wines. Today, under the guidance of the fifth-generation winemaker, Danie Malan, Allesverloren's commitment to quality wine production endures, with many of its offerings receiving accolades on international platforms.
