Arendsig Estate Wines
Winery Description
Location and History
Arendsig Wine Farm, a family-run estate, is where Lourens van der Westhuizen was raised. After completing high school in Robertson, he pursued a degree in Agriculture at the Peninsula University of Technology, which included a year and a half of study at Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch. During his time at Elsenburg, he discovered his passion for vineyard management and winemaking. Upon finishing his studies, he gained practical experience in the USA and France before returning home as a fifth-generation farmer to produce Arendsig's first wines.
In 2004, Lourens started crafting single vineyard wines from carefully selected parcels of Shiraz and Chardonnay. That same year, his father entrusted him with a pristine part of the farm to establish a vineyard. The objective was to produce single vineyard wines, each sourced from a specific block that embodies the terroir. The varied soil types in the Southern Robertson Valley, from sandy to rocky, combined with micro-irrigation, contribute to the high quality of the grapes.
The vineyards, planted in an east-to-west orientation, benefit from the region's climate, including morning fog and cooling afternoon breezes. The positioning of the vineyards in relation to the sun and wind direction, along with the favourable climate, enhances the distinctiveness of each block. Their artisanal approach and minimal intervention techniques, which include natural yeasts and neutral vessels for maturation, further improve the balance of these terroir-driven wines, ensuring a wine experience of the highest quality and authenticity.
Lourens' winemaking philosophy focuses on minimal intervention, utilising natural yeasts and neutral vessels for maturation to showcase the unique terroir. The farm's water is sourced from the Du Toitskloof and Ceres mountain ranges. Maturation occurs in neutral vessels to highlight the specific characteristics unique to the site.
