Bellingham Wines
Winery Description
Location and History
Bellingham Wines is situated in the scenic Franschhoek Valley, specifically in Groot Drakenstein, South Africa. This area is famous for its beautiful landscapes, surrounded by mountains and lush vineyards. The terroir boasts deep, well-draining soils, ideal for viticulture. Bellingham has a rich history dating back to 1693, when Gerrit Janz van Vuuren and his wife planted the first vines, marking the beginning of this reputable winery. Originally named "Belle en Champ," or Beautiful Fields in French, the estate transitioned through various owners, with the Podlashuk couple being pivotal in revitalising the farm in 1943. Their vision led to significant advancements in the winery, such as creating the Cape's first rosé and the first single varietal Shiraz. Today, Bellingham showcases a contemporary approach to winemaking, under the guidance of head winemaker Richard Duckitt, who draws on his international experience in California and Bordeaux. The winery emphasises sustainable practices while crafting wines that reflect the uniqueness of the region, promoting biodiversity in vineyards and responsible resource usage.
Bellingham is also a member of the Old Vine Project, an organisation championing the documentation and preservation of Old Vineyard sites across South Africa
