Cloof

Winery Description

Location and History

Nestled in the picturesque Darling region of South Africa, Cloof Wine Estate captures the essence of this unique terroir. The vineyards benefit from the region's distinctive hot and dry climate, producing low-yielding bush vines that thrive in sandy soils. Founded in the early 18th century, the estate embodies a rich heritage and showcases the daring spirit of its winemakers, who aim to craft both timeless and modern wines. The name 'Cloof,' derived from the Afrikaans word for a gap between two hills, reflects the enchanting landscape that surrounds the estate. The vineyard's pioneer spirit began with the planting of its oldest vines in 1966, followed by expansions in the 1970s and 1980s. Peter Duckitt, a direct descendant of early settlers in the Darling region, manages the vineyards, honoring a family legacy often linked to their multi-award-winning Duckitt Range. Cloof Wine Estate encapsulates vital sustainability practices, showcasing a commitment to environmental conservation while delivering wines that truly reflect their terroir.
