Clos Malverne Wine Estate
Winery Description
Location and History
Seymour Pritchard purchased the 10-hectare farm, originally named 'Malvern Heights,' in 1969 from Colonel JW Billingham, who had named it after the rolling hills near Malvern in England. When Seymour turned his attention to winemaking in the mid-1980s, France was still considered the heart of the wine world. He decided to add a touch of "French flair" to the name, changing it to Clos Malverne, inspired by the homestead on the farm, which reminded him of a French Clos.
Before 1985, Clos Malverne had been supplying wine grapes to Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery for several years. It was only in 1986 that the first vintage under the Clos Malverne label was produced. In the 1990s, the estate expanded its vineyards, and in 1995, Clos Malverne became one of the first wineries to produce a classic Cape Blend.
Clos Malverne is truly a family affair, with a vision and commitment to the handcrafting of excellent wines. Visit the acclaimed restaurant with its spectacular view, be pampered in their spa, stay overnight in luxury rooms or a self-catering guest cottage.
Wine Tasting
The Devon Valley microclimate plays a crucial role in the quality of the grapes. Despite its shallow depth, the valley captures the mists that linger around Stellenbosch in the early summer mornings, creating a cooler environment that extends the ripening season and produces perfectly ripe grapes. The estate has 23 hectares of vineyards, cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinotage.
Wine tastings are available in the stylish Tasting Room/Restaurant, where guests can enjoy a tasting before lunch or pair it with a cheese platter for a light meal. Clos Malverne is renowned for its innovative food and wine pairings, including the signature Ice Cream & Wine Pairing, featuring seasonal, hand-made delicacies. This unique experience was the first of its kind in Stellenbosch and remains a highlight of the estate. Other pairings include pizza and wine, cheese and wine, meat and wine, as well as an ice-cream and wine pairing, with ice-cream flavours changing every six months.
Private tastings in the cellar with the winemaker is available by appointment.
