Domein Doornkraal
Winery Description
Location and History
Nestled between the Swartberg and Kammanassie mountain ranges, De Rust is a quaint Victorian village offering some of the most spectacular views in the Klein Karoo. The area's wine route is renowned for its exceptional fortified wines, paired with cuisine that draws from rich local traditions. The surrounding farmlands are famous for producing ostriches, olives, almonds, pomegranates, figs, lamb, and vegetable seeds. Over the years, De Rust has become a haven for artists, inspired by its charm and stunning natural surroundings. About 10 km outside of De Rust lies the Doornkraal Farm Stall (Padstal).
At Doornkraal, nestled in the foothills of the Swartberge, the Le Roux family has been making wine since the late 1800s. In addition to wine, the farm cultivates lucerne, vegetable seeds, and pastures for sheep, cattle, pigs, and horses. Doornkraal, a working farm steeped in over 140 years of Le Roux family history and pride, offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Visitors are invited to join Swepie Le Roux for a toast to authentic farm life.
Wine Tasting
Doornkraal is celebrated for its range of fortified wines, including Jerepigo, and a sparkling wine made with Muscat grapes called Tickled Pink. Dry wines include the Kannaland Chenin Blanc and Merlot. Wine tastings take place inside The Padstal, offering an intimate experience of the farm's finest.
Restaurant
The Doornkraal Padstal extends the farm’s renowned Klein Karoo hospitality, featuring local delicacies such as chutneys, jams, fresh fruits, honey, smoked pumpkin seeds, sweet-sour beans, green fig preserves, chocolates, and almond treats. The Padstal also serves as a quintessential farm stall, offering Klein Karoo wines, brandies, ports, gins, lamb, dried fruits, gifts, arts, and more. It’s the perfect stop for a quick bite and a good cup of coffee. Open for breakfast and lunch, the Padstal is famous for its Roosterkoek.
Accommodation
Guests are invited to experience life on the farm by staying in one of the private cottages nestled at the foot of the majestic Swartberge. Each morning, freshly baked goods, seasonal fruit, and yoghurt are delivered for a light breakfast. Breakfast times are arranged upon arrival, and housekeeping is completed afterward. Guests can also enjoy a Braai Box with sides or a picnic, cooking the provided meat or vegetables themselves. A bottle of Doornkraal wine (or a non-alcoholic option) is included, allowing guests to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the Klein Karoo’s vast landscapes and starry skies.
Tours and Activities
