Fynbos Estate & Dragonridge Winery
Winery Description
Location and History
Nestled between Dragonridge and Sonkop Peak, this natural paradise offers a unique blend of Strandveld, Cape Mountain fynbos, and renosterveld vegetation, making it a botanist’s haven. The estate, which includes a grand Victorian farmhouse and quaint country cottages surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, has become a popular destination for nature lovers, offering simple yet comfortable accommodation, fine quality food, and wine.
Fynbos Estate is part of the Paardeberg Conservancy and became a Contract Nature Reserve in 2013 under the auspices of Cape Nature. The Simson-Simons Nature Reserve on the estate honors Denis and Gerry Simson, and Johan’s parents, Jack and Ray (Alexander) Simons.
The estate produces natural, organic wines primarily from Mediterranean cultivars grown on the farm. These wines, named after the dragon-shaped mountain Dragonridge, are crafted using traditional methods from the early 1900s. With minimal interference, the wines express the unique conditions of the farm, offering distinctive character while remaining unaggressive when young and developing well with cellaring. Fynbos Estate is a proud member of the Swartland Independent Producers (SIP), a group committed to producing wine in this traditional manner.
In addition to wine, the estate also produces olive oil from approximately 900 organically farmed olive trees, featuring cultivars like Lecchine, Mission, Coratino, Frantoia, Kalamata, and Nocellara del Belice. The olive oil, made in the European tradition, is particularly potent and peppery. The estate also produces a limited amount of Limoncello from organically farmed lemon trees, as well as lemon cordial and salted lemons, which are served to guests.
