Groot Phesantekraal
Winery Description
Location and History
The historic Groot Phesantekraal farm is situated in the picturesque Durbanville wine region of the Western Cape, South Africa. It rests a mere 30 minutes from Cape Town, making it an accessible retreat for wine enthusiasts. Established in 1698, the winery has transformed over the centuries from a grain, cattle, and sheep farm into a vibrant vineyard spreading over 50 hectares. A testament to family heritage, it is now managed by the fourth generation of the Brink family who uphold a commitment to quality. The original manor house, with its Victorian enhancements dating back to 1810, stands as a poignant reminder of the rich architectural history of the region. Restoration efforts reveal an intricate connection to the past, showcasing features such as an original water well thought to originate from the Dutch occupation. The rolling hills surrounding the farm are adorned with wheat and canola fields, alongside flocks of sheep and herds of livestock, providing a lively working atmosphere that reflects the agricultural traditions of Durbanville.
