Herold Wines

Winery Description

Location and History

Herold Wines is located on the northern slopes of Cradock Peak in the Outeniqua Mountains between George and Oudtshoorn. Surrounded by a nature reserve on three sides, the vineyard sits at an altitude of 650m to 700m, benefiting from frequent mountain mists, winter frosts, and cooling summer winds. This unique environment creates a protracted growing season, resulting in high-quality wines.
Herold Wines was established in 1999, initially planting Pinot Noir and later expanding to include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Nico and Maureen Fourie took over the farm in 2011. The farm is 324 hectares, with the vineyard now covering 7.9 hectares with 30,000 vines. The Herold team, deeply connected to the land, manages the vineyard with minimal intervention, avoiding fertilizers and pesticides and maintaining a sustainable approach to farming.

Wine Tasting

Visitors can enjoy wine tasting in an unpretentious area within the working cellar, often witnessing winemaking in action. The tasting experience is warm and homely, with the owners frequently on hand to share stories around the cellar fireplace or at vine-shaded tables.

The wines, particularly Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, are crafted, bottled, and certified in the Outeniqua Ward, reflecting the unique terroir of the region. The vineyard is a testament to perseverance, with the team overcoming challenges from wildlife and weather to produce consistently fine wines. Herold uses no sulfates in their wines.

Restaurant

Light lunches and picnic facilities are available. Cheese platters and pancakes can be ordered during the week, while on Saturdays and public holidays, pizzas are also available.

Accommodation

Accommodation on the farm is available in renovated labourers' cottages, fully equipped for self-catering. The cottages offer a peaceful retreat without the distractions of television or radio, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the tranquillity of the countryside. There are accessible hiking trails into the Outeniqua Nature Reserve. Herold Wines is ideally located for exploring the Garden Route, Klein Karoo, and historic mountain passes.
