Iona Wines
Winery Description
Location and History
The Iona Highlands, positioned at 420m above sea level, create a unique vineyard climate for Iona Wines. Located in Elgin, South Africa, the region's cool climate and high humidity facilitate the gradual ripening of grapes, allowing for the preservation of aromatic compounds. The vineyard benefits from its proximity to the cold Atlantic Ocean, which contributes to its cool temperatures and orographic cloud cover. The climate is characterised by prevailing South Easterly winds, distinguishing it as one of the coolest vineyard sites in the country. The farm sits within the UNESCO-certified Kogelberg Biosphere and is surrounded by a vast area rich in diverse flora. These distinctive climatic and geographical features aid in producing premium wines expressive of the Elgin terroir. Iona emphasises the importance of soil health, utilising ancient river valley deposits and decomposed materials which nourish their vines effectively. Owners and employees alike contribute to a shared philosophy of sustainability and environmental respect, ensuring that the holistic relationship between soil, plants, and humans is maintained.
