Joostenberg Wine Estate
Winery Description
Location and History
Joostenberg Farm, with roots tracing back to the late 1600s, was established by a Swedish settler and features a classic Cape Dutch manor house from 1756, now a national monument. Initially, the farm practised mixed agriculture, producing wine and brandy from the early 1800s until 1947. The Myburgh family purchased the farm in 1879 and have maintained ownership since. Winemaking ceased in 1947, and for 52 years, grapes were sold to a local co-op. In 1999, fifth-generation brothers Tyrrel and Philip Myburgh revived the winemaking tradition, focusing on small-scale, family-owned operations.
Located in the southwest corner of the Paarl wine appellation, in the Muldersvlei area, Joostenberg farms on two adjacent properties. The boundary between the Paarl and Stellenbosch appellations passes through it. The farm's proximity to Table Bay and False Bay, about 30 km away, moderates the Mediterranean climate with cool sea breezes, supporting the growth of Noble Rot (Botrytis cinerea) for their Noble Late Harvest wines. The soils are predominantly duplex, featuring heavy clay subsoils and topsoils of decomposed granite and Malmesbury shale.
Wine Tasting
Joostenberg emphasizes organic farming and dry-farming practices to preserve the terroir's natural characteristics. The vineyards, covering 30 hectares, produce low yields of 3 to 8 tons per hectare. Planted varietals include Chenin Blanc, Viognier, and Roussanne for whites and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah/Shiraz, Touriga Nacional, and Mourvèdre for reds. The farm achieved full organic status in 2012, underscoring its dedication to sustainable and high-quality winemaking.
Joostenberg adheres to a philosophy of minimalist winemaking in the winery, guiding the wine through the process with minimal interference. Additives are used sparingly, with sulfur dioxide added in moderation, especially in organic wines, and occasional tartaric acid adjustments to prevent spoilage. The focus remains on producing wines true to their origin, with a strong emphasis on natural methods and minimal use of new barrels to maintain the wine's authenticity.
Restaurant
The Kraal Restaurant, nestled in a shaded courtyard at Joostenberg Wine Estate, serves slow farm lunches at outdoor tables amidst fruit trees. The weekly set lunch menu is inspired by seasonal and local produce from the farm garden and nearby farms. The dishes reflect local flavours and food memories. Menus are regularly updated on social media.
The full range of Joostenberg wines, including some rare bottles from the small batch collection and specially kept older vintages, are on offer. Making a reservation is essential.
