Joubert Tradauw

Winery Description

Location and History

Joubert-Tradauw is a family-owned private cellar in the Tradouw Valley within the Klein Karoo, along the renowned R62 route, just outside Barrydale. In 1963, Schalk-Willem Joubert left Wellington to farm in the fertile Tradouw Valley, focusing on fruit and wine grapes. His son, Jacobus Joubert, father of Meyer Joubert, saw the potential for cultivating premium grape varieties. Over the years, the farm expanded its offerings, planting Cabernet Franc in 1982, among other varieties.

The Joubert family name traces back to the French Huguenots who arrived in South Africa in 1668, while "Tradouw" is derived from a Khoisan word meaning "footpath of the Khoisan/San women" through the Tradouw Valley. The farm was established in 1710. The property is 1000 hectares, with 15 hectares under vines. The annual bottle production is 45 000 bottles. Soil type varies from Karoo shale to clay.

The winemaking journey at Joubert-Tradauw began in the late 1990s when Meyer Joubert pursued his childhood dream of producing wine. Meyer studied viticulture at Elsenburg and gained experience in California’s Napa Valley. He is known for his deep respect for nature and minimal intervention in winemaking. Meyer and his wife, Beate, who also worked in Napa, share a passion for winemaking and have raised four children on the farm, continuing the family legacy.

Meyer and his family restored an old farm building into an ageing maturation cellar. In 1998, they constructed a fermentation cellar using the farm's rocky soil. The first harvest in 1999 led to the production of the R62 Merlot/Cabernet Blend, released after a 14-month ageing period in Burgundy oak barrels.

Wine Tasting

Wines at Joubert-Tradauw include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. The Joubert-Tradauw R62 (2016) is named after the scenic road along which the farm is located. The wine is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz. Wine tasting takes place in the tasting room. Guests can also purchase wine to enjoy on the outside terrace.

Restaurant

R62 Deli Alfresco:

Joubert-Tradauw enhances the wine experience with its popular R62 Deli Alfresco, specialising in Klein Karoo tapas. Once a modest tin-roofed dwelling, the Deli was transformed into a Mediterranean-style farm kitchen with rustic décor and a cosy indoor fireplace. Guests can enjoy outdoor dining under the vine-covered veranda, with views of the farm, the Tradouw Valley, and the Langeberge mountains.

R62 Deli Alfresco offers Klein Karoo tapas, with dishes like rosemary chicken, pies and stew. The platters are accompanied by homemade offerings including tapenade, onion relish, bread, cheeses, stewed fruit and fresh fruit. The deli's rustic charm and outdoor seating make it a favourite spot for visitors. Desserts like the French chocolate cake with green fig and lemon-meringue cheesecake are also available. Reservations are essential.

Beate Joubert, the author of Proe die Klein Karoo and Taste the Little Karoo, captures the essence of the region's food traditions in her cookbooks, offering unique recipes from snacks to desserts. These books are available at leading retailers or directly from Beate.
