KWV Cathedral Cellar
Winery Description
Location and History
Built in 1930, the cellar earned the name Cathedral Cellar after Dutch poet Antonie Donkersloot remarked that it was a true cathedral of wine, referring to its high dome-shaped ceiling with pressed aluminum and tinted windows.
Today, the 32 / 12,000-liter stuk-vats are preserved for decorative purposes, containing lye wine, a fortified wine used to preserve the vats. The cellar was renovated in 2005, with architect Johann Wessels tasked with maintaining its functionality as a serious wine production facility while allowing for public access.
One of the standout features of the renovation is the floor, made of Paarl granite slabs interspersed with wooden staves. Subtle lighting highlights the dome and arches, while the tinted windows symbolize the sunrise and sunset over Paarl, set against the backdrop of the surrounding mountains in the valley.
The Cathedral Cellar has been the workspace of some of South Africa’s most renowned winemakers. Visitors stepping into this space can experience the rich legacy engraved in its walls.
