Wine Tasting

Wine tastings at La Motte offer guests an immersive experience into the estate's esteemed portfolio. The foundational focus is on the characteristic La Motte Syrah, which showcases the terroir of Franschhoek. The estate's commitment to quality is evident in its offerings, which include a variety of award-winning wines, such as the 2020 La Motte Syrah known for its complexity and elegance. Guests can engage in tutored tastings in the Historic Cellar, discussing wine-making techniques and the unique characteristics of the estate's wines.

Seated at hand-made tasting tables, a welcoming tasting counter or on comfortable sofas, visitors have an unimpeded view of the working cellars and original artworks by acclaimed South African artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef. Guests can choose between the Current Vintage Tasting, Vinoteque Tasting or the Varietal Glass Specific Tasting.

Restaurant

The Bakery & Garden Café offers freshly baked bread from an on-site wood-fired oven, forming the foundation of a delicious seasonal menu. Guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and tempting pastries in cosy indoor or outdoor seating, while also exploring serene gardens with ancient oaks, a tranquil pond, and a farm-inspired playground. Bread and pastries are also available for purchase to take home.

The La Motte restaurant and Farm Shop are currently closed for renovations.

La Motte offers a variety of cultural and outdoor experiences, ideal for those interested in exploring the estate's rich history, art, and natural beauty. Visitors can enjoy guided cellar tours, with pre-booking required, while the La Motte Museum provides a stimulating cultural-historical experience, showcasing the estate's history and carefully curated art exhibitions. The museum also offers a Virtual Museum Experience, featuring exclusive one-on-one presentations and conversations with the Museum Curator.

Guests can further explore the estate through various guided walks, including the Historic Walk, Sculpture Walk, and Art Experience walkabout, which offer insights into the Cape Dutch architecture, estate sculptures, and the personal stories behind the art exhibits. These walks must be pre-booked, with operating hours available for reference.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the La Motte Hiking Trail provides an opportunity to discover the estate's natural assets and breathtaking views. The circular route spans 5km, with a 2km hiking section, taking approximately 2-3 hours. Self-guided hikes are available daily during the summer months, and guided hikes are offered on Tuesdays, both requiring pre-booking.

While La Motte does not accommodate weddings or conferences, the Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant serves as an ideal venue for group events. The estate also hosts a range of cultural events, including art exhibitions featuring J.H. Pierneef's works and classical music concerts in the Historic Cellar. These seasonal events, often highlighting the estate's commitment to wine, food, and culture, make La Motte a vibrant destination for both locals and tourists.
