Lozärn Wines

Winery Description

Location and History

Lozärn wines, crafted on the Doornbosch farm between Bonnievale and Stormsvlei, pay tribute to a family matriarch and celebrate a red varietal reminiscent of South American vibrancy. Kathleen May’s life story is deeply entwined with Lozärn's history, from her adventurous upbringing between Europe and South Africa to her unwavering dedication to farming in the Robertson Valley. Her pioneering spirit and connection to the land laid the groundwork for the family’s wine endeavours.

Born in 1898 in Fish Hoek to an English mother, Amy Sedgwick, and a German father, Robert Müller, Kathleen—affectionately known as Kay—spent her childhood between Europe and South Africa. Kathleen’s grandfather, Captain James Sedgwick, founded the renowned Sedgwick’s Old Brown sherry enterprise. She later studied horticulture in Warwickshire, UK. During World War I, her father’s service in the German army prompted Kay and her family to flee to Switzerland, where the picturesque city of Lucerne left a lasting impression on her.

At 21, Kay married Sebastian Smuts in Harare, Zimbabwe, and they soon moved to South Africa. In 1923, they purchased land in the Robertson Valley and named it Lucerne, honouring Kay’s cherished memories of the Swiss city. Kay began her farming journey, primarily with ducks and chickens. The farm later passed to their son, Ivan Sedgwick Smuts, who expanded into vineyards and orchards. Today, Kay’s grandson, Grant Smuts and his sons, Juan-Ivan and Sean-Grant, continue the family’s farming tradition on the land.

The Lozärn label is a tribute to Kay’s enduring legacy, featuring a delicately designed duck skeleton, a nod to her early days as a duck farmer. This label reflects European heritage and South African roots, crafted with attention to detail and exuding sophistication.

At Lozärn, every bottle uncorks a story of resilience, tradition, and passion. With every sip, one embarks on a journey where the past meets the present in a harmonious blend of taste and elegance. As a tribute to Kathleen Smuts and the generations that followed, Lozärn wines embody the pinnacle of excellence.

Wine Tasting

Lozärn’s wines are available in three ranges. The Heritage Range, featuring Carménére and Kay’s Legacy. Kay’s Legacy is a Bordeaux-style red blend with notes of bay leaves, licorince and cherry tobacco. Matured in French second- and third fill barrels for 14 months, with each cultivar aged sepearte, the wine enhances the fruit of its terroir. The Elemental Range showcases single varieties like Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec; and the Lifestyle Range, which includes Sauvignon Blanc, Carménère Rosé, and Shiraz.

The wines offer a sensory experience with hints of bay leaves, liquorice, and cherry tobacco. Matured in French barrels for 14 months, the terroir’s fruit is enhanced, with each cultivar aged separately.

Wine tasting at Lozärn is an experience to remember, whether in the cellar or in front of the cellar overlooking the vineyards, mountains and the dam. The serene surroundings enhance the enjoyment of our wines, making it a perfect destination for wine lovers.
