Maanschijn
Winery Description
Location and History
Douglas Mylrea and Paul Hoogwerf, who attended both high school and university together, collaborated to create their wine company. After studying winemaking in Stellenbosch, they embarked on separate journeys, gaining experience in cellars and vineyards around the world. Years passed until a series of fortunate events brought them together again. During this reunion, they discovered a shared passion and philosophy toward winemaking, leading them to co-found their wine company.
Named after the Dutch term for moonlight, Maanschijn is an artisanal wine production located inside a heritage building beneath the tall peak of Maanschynkop. Within its historic walls, the duo ferments low-intervention wine sourced from vineyards in the cooler Walker Bay wine district. They aim to craft distinctively fresh and uniquely South African wine with their cultured approach.
Wine Tasting
Their offering comprises two ranges, fine and fun, respectively: their Herbarium Collection and Brunch Club. The Herbarium Collection is composed of two blends, the Cape White and Cape Red. The Brunch Club, designed for the daytime, is comprised of three wines of different shades, the Methode Ancestrale, Dry White and Dry Rosé.
Experience a picnic at the Wine Garden by Maanschijn. Under the shade of trees or umbrellas, on picnic blankets or benches, the team looks forward to sharing their hospitality. The picnic platter, available by reservation, is best enjoyed with a serving of wine by Maanschijn.
