Nederburg Wines
Winery Description
Location and History
Located on the outskirts of the historic town of Paarl, approximately a 50-minute drive from Cape Town, Nederburg Wines boasts a long and proud winemaking legacy. The story began in 1791 when German immigrant Philippus Wolvaart acquired 49 hectares of land in the Paarl Valley, naming the property Nederburgh in honor of VOC commissioner Sebastiaan Cornelis Nederburgh. The thatched and gabled Cape Dutch manor house, completed by Wolvaart in 1800, stands today as a national monument.
At the core of Nederburg’s winemaking history are the individuals who have shaped its rich and vibrant heritage. Generations of award-winning and innovative winemakers have contributed to its success, including Ilse Graue, who lived in the manor house until the late 1950s, graciously hosting numerous visitors to Nederburg.
Blending innovation with history, Nederburg has become one of South Africa’s most renowned wine brands. Visitors can explore the estate's fascinating history while sampling its award-winning wines.
