Ormonde Wine Estate
Winery Description
Location and History
Located just an hour's drive from Cape Town on the outskirts of the charming town of Darling, Ormonde Wine Estate is nestled where the rugged Darling hills rise and fall along the contours of an ancient granite intrusion. These molten rocks, pushed from the earth to 300 meters above sea level, protect the vineyards from the Atlantic Ocean, while banks of fog roll in, bringing coolness and moisture.
The Basson family has deep roots in the history of Darling. Grandfather Vernon Basson, part of a large family, settled on a farm in Philadelphia, a town near Darling. In 1970, Nico Basson, an avid animal lover, returned to Darling and purchased the farm to establish a highly acclaimed dairy stud. Through perseverance, foresight, and hard work, he began planting vineyards on the farm, long before the area became the premier wine-producing region it is today. Now, the next generation of Bassons is learning the craft, playing in the vineyards from a young age.
Ormonde Wine Estate takes pride in creating wines that reflect their unique terroir, pouring passion into every bottle for wine lovers around the world to enjoy. With its remote, country charm—secluded from the usual tourist destinations—the estate looks forward to welcoming guests to its friendly and inviting atmosphere.
Wine Tasting
With its close proximity to the cool Atlantic Ocean and location within the protected Cape Floral Kingdom, the uniqueness of the Darling Hills terroir is undeniable. The Cape Floral Kingdom, the world’s richest reservoir of plant species, boasts 9,600 species, with the Darling wine region home to 600 of them. Among these, Gladiolus Carinatus, also known as bloupypie, thrives in the terroir and contributes to the distinct character and quality of the wines.
The vineyards are situated at altitudes between 150-300 meters above sea level, adding another cooling factor that extends the ripening period. This results in wines with fantastic natural acidity and layers of fruity characteristics. Committed to environmental stewardship, the estate is a member of the Biodiversity in Wine Initiative and the Integrated Production of Wine Initiatives.
The estate focuses on five wine ranges: Chip off the Old Block, Basson, Ondine, the Ormonde Barrel Selection range, and the Alexanderfontein retail range. These wines are wonderfully aromatic, fresh, and well-balanced, crafted for unpretentious pleasure and enjoyment. The offerings include Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as more unique varieties like Grenache, Malbec, and award-winning Cabernet Franc.
In addition to wine tasting, the estate offers a Chocolate & Wine Pairing, a Kids’ Pairing, and a Cheese & Charcuterie platter.
