Packwood

Winery Description

Location and History

Packwood Wine Estate is a small, down to earth, garagiste winery situated on a beautiful country estate in Harkerville between Plettenberg Bay and Knysna. Visitors access the estate via a scenic 6-kilometre untarred road from the Fisanthoek turnoff. The farm’s unique terroir, positioned 330 metres above sea level and facing both the sun and the sea, creates a microclimate ideal for cultivating cool climate grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.

Founded in 2006 by owners Peter and Vicky Gent, originally from England, Packwood emphasises sustainable farming practices, including rainwater harvesting, organic fertilisers, and biodynamic management to ensure the health of the land and the quality of their wines. The estate, which also operates a dairy established in 1998, has earned a reputation for producing award-winning wines, reflecting the owners' commitment to excellence.

Wine Tasting

The vineyard at Packwood Wine Estate was established in 2006, specialising in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. The vines are planted on gently rolling hills, 330 metres above sea level at the highest point of the farm, facing both the sun and the sea. Sustainable practices are prioritised throughout the vineyard to maintain the health of the land and produce high-quality wines.

Visitors to Packwood Wine Estate can enjoy wine tastings in the relaxed outdoor tasting area or on the lawn during warm days. The estate offers a selection of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Blanc de Noir, and, when available, Packwood’s bubbly. The wine tasting experience invites guests to savour a diverse range of estate-grown wines, including Cap Classique, each reflecting the distinctive characteristics of its varietal. Knowledgeable staff guide visitors through the tasting, offering insights into the unique flavour profiles and production methods behind each wine.

With the estate’s modest production scale, wine availability is limited, making each bottle a special find. Guests are encouraged to purchase their favourite wines on-site, with a complimentary delivery service offered for orders of twelve bottles or more to Plettenberg Bay and Knysna. To enhance the tasting experience, visitors can enjoy delicious handmade farmhouse cheese boards, crafted from ingredients sourced from the estate, as well as relaxing cheese lunches served in a peaceful environment overlooking the farm’s sweeping views. Packwood provides a unique opportunity to savour fine wines and local produce while taking in the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Restaurant

Packwood Wine Estate does not have a full service restaurant. Visitors can indulge in homemade farmhouse cheese lunches, made with fresh produce sourced directly from the estate. The menu includes various options for cheese boards paired with freshly baked bread, homemade preserves, and seasonal salads, making for a delightful culinary experience. Guests can also opt for a special breakfast featuring Eggs Benedict, made with farm fresh organic eggs, hollandaise sauce and home baked bread. The panoramic views of the picturesque countryside create a perfect backdrop for dining, making Packwood an ideal destination for guests looking to enjoy good food, wine, and serene natural surroundings.

Accommodation

Guests are invited to step gently, breathe deeply, and embrace the natural beauty surrounding Packwood. Offering a peaceful retreat, the estate provides a taste of country living with accommodation options at the Country House or farm cottage. Alongside the estate's wines, visitors can enjoy optional breakfast with bubbles, a homemade cheese lunch, and spectacular views. Located near the Sanparks reserve, the estate is an ideal base for hiking and cycling through pristine forests, with additional MTB trails winding through picturesque farmland, ravines, and coastal routes.

The secluded Winemaker’s Cottage, nestled among the trees, accommodates two adults and features an enclosed private deck at the front and a small terrace at the rear.
