Piekenierskloof
Winery Description
Location and History
Founded in 1923 by Johan Abraham van Zyl and his wife Wilhelmina, Piekenierskloof Wines is situated on the rugged mountain ridge of the Piekenierskloof Pass in Citrusdal, South Africa. Their son, Carel van Zyl, established the first vineyards in 1962, which have now evolved into a significant wine production area known for its Grenache varietals. Celebrated for having one of the largest Grenache plantings in the Cape, the region thrives in hot, dry weather that perfectly suits the grape. The vineyards flourish in sandy loam soils, offering a unique terroir that gives rise to the winery's acclaimed wine profile. The vibrant orange labels symbolize the Dutch heritage of the winery, reflecting the region's citrus farming history and rich family legacy. Today, the fourth generation of the van Zyl family continues to innovate while honoring tradition by producing exceptional wines from meticulously farmed vines, some over sixty years old. The location grants breathtaking views, providing guests with a beautiful setting to explore the vineyards and taste the rich heritage embodied in each wine.
