Rickety Bridge
Winery Description
Location and History
Rickety Bridge Wine Estate, located 3 kilometers from the village of Franschhoek, is located between the Dassenberg Mountain and the Franschhoek River, with view of vineyards and the majestic Wemmershoek Mountains. The estate covers 56 hectares, with 14 hectares under vine.
The land's history dates back to 1694 when it was part of La Provence, one of the first seven French Huguenot farms in Franschhoek. The property was later subdivided, and in 1797, this section was granted to the widow Paulina De Villiers. The farm changed hands several times and became known as 'Rickety Bridge' in the 1980s, named after the old railway sleeper bridge that crossed the Franschhoek River onto the property.
Today, Rickety Bridge is home to a modern winery, a bistro-style restaurant, luxurious accommodation, and a countryside wedding and functions venue.
Wine Tasting
The Wine Tasting Centre is adjacent to the wine cellar, offering a glimpse into the workings of a winery. Located on an elevated platform, it provides views of the vineyards and the Franschhoek mountains. On warm days, wine lovers can enjoy tastings on the terraces, surrounded by vines. On cooler days, guests can gather around the wood-burning fireplace while savoring Rickety Bridge’s fine wines. The estate can accommodate up to 80 people for wine tasting in the conference center by prior arrangement.
Restaurant
The Wine Tasting Centre also offers a selection of wood-fired pizzas, along with cheese and charcuterie platters. Paulina’s, the Estate’s flagship restaurant, serves a variety of elegant bistro-style dishes.
Rickety Bridge also offers a unique ‘Potjieskos’ experience, where guests can enjoy a 2-3 hour dining experience making their own potjie with friends and family. This traditional South African dish is a special way to enjoy a meal with loved ones. Pre-booking is essential.
Visitors can also choose from a cheese and wine pairing or a panna cotta and wine pairing. There is a pairing for the kids and a non-alcoholic pairing for non-drinkers.
Accommodation
Rickety Bridge offers two accommodation options: the historic Cape Dutch Manor House and the Basse Provence Guesthouse, located at the sister estate, Basse Provence, across the Franschhoek River.
The Rickety Bridge Manor House is a 5-star guesthouse featuring 3 Deluxe Rooms with magnificent views of the vineyards and mountains, along with a swimming pool and two lounge areas.
Basse Provence Guesthouse is a 4-star guesthouse situated on the neighboring estate. It includes 3 rooms in the Manor House, 5 rooms in the Country House, and a 2-bedroom cottage, all with valley and mountain views.
Tours and Activities
Rickety Bridge offers various activities, including scenic walks, beautiful gardens, and boules in the vines. Guests can also participate in a Cellar Tour, where knowledgeable staff explain the winemaking process from vine to barrel. Additionally, an interactive Wine Blending session is available, where participants can create their own bottle of wine with a personalised label or you can attempt the ancient art of Sabrage. Pre-booking of tours and activities is essential.
For special events, Rickety Bridge provides an ideal setting for weddings, events, and conferences. With a beautiful Cape Dutch Manor House, a popular restaurant, and a large wine tasting center, the estate can arrange both large and small celebrations for family, friends, or colleagues.
Visitors can also take advantage of the Franschhoek Wine Tram, which offers a convenient way to explore the town’s wine culture without worrying about transportation.
