Rust en Vrede
Winery Description
Location and History
Nestled between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, at the base of the Helderberg mountains, Rust en Vrede embodies the essence of tranquillity. The estate is protected from the elements and the cooling influences of the nearby ocean, creating an authentic Stellenbosch terroir that is ideally suited to full-bodied red wines. The focus is on producing exceptional quality, mainly through the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
Rust en Vrede was officially established on March 12th, 1694, granted by the Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel. The estate's Cape Dutch buildings, dating back to 1780, are now recognized as National Monuments. These historic structures continue to be used daily, with the original winery now housing the Rust en Vrede Restaurant and the Manor House and Jonkershuis still home to the Engelbrecht family.
In 1977, Jannie and Ellen Engelbrecht acquired the estate and undertook an extensive restoration. The original winery was revived, and by 1978, the first vintage of the modern era was produced. Significant re-planting of vineyards followed, focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. Over time, the wines have garnered acclaim and are currently crafted under the stewardship of Jean Engelbrecht.
Wine Tasting
Sheltered by the Helderberg and Stellenbosch mountains from prevailing winds, Rust en Vrede enjoys a warm microclimate ideal for red wine production, especially Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. These varieties thrive in the estate's environment, producing wines known for their rich body, robust structure, and excellent ageing potential.
Visitors can sample the full range of Rust en Vrede wines in the Tasting Room, located within the cellar. Tastings are led by knowledgeable staff, who are also available to offer informal tours of the underground cellar.
Restaurant
Rust en Vrede Restaurant is housed in the estate's original historic cellar and offers a refined yet relaxed fine-dining experience. The building's unique charm has been preserved, providing guests with an atmosphere that harkens back to simpler times, where the focus is on exceptional wine and food.
Many guests pair their wine tasting with the estate's well-regarded Winemaker's Lunch, featuring a simple menu served in the Tasting Room or outdoors beneath oak trees. The restaurant also offers a set six-course menu with wine pairings. The menu is subject to change based on the availability of ingredients, ensuring that each visit is a unique culinary experience.
