Rustenberg Wines
Winery Description
Location and History
Founded in 1682, Rustenberg Estate is a historic wine farm in the valley of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, South Africa's renowned wine region. With a rich legacy shaped over centuries, the estate reflects a deep connection with nature, producing wines embodying their unique terroir, varietal character, and refined style.
Spanning over 300 years, Rustenberg has seen various custodians and agricultural endeavours contributing to its storied heritage. Under the current stewardship of the Barlow Family, the estate continues to focus on excellence, from the vineyards to the cellar, while preserving this remarkable piece of land.
The estate's long history, historic buildings, gardens, conservation areas, and wines all contribute to what Rustenberg represents today. Visitors are encouraged to explore the beautiful Schoongezicht Manor House Garden, where they can take in the roses, listen to the birds, or enjoy the tranquillity of the labyrinth for a moment of outdoor meditation.
Wine Tasting
Rustenberg produces nearly 20 wines across three distinct ranges, offering something for every palate. The handcrafted premium range includes an estate Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, produced in limited quantities with excellent ageing potential. The flagship range features three estate wines: a Syrah, Chardonnay, and a Bordeaux-style red blend named John X Merriman. Additionally, the regional range showcases wines that reflect the regions where they are crafted or blended.
Visitors are welcomed to the Tasting Room to experience the full range of wines, engage with knowledgeable wine ambassadors, view the awards display, and relax in the serene farm setting.

Tours and Activities
Guests are welcome to explore the Schoongezicht Gardens, located next to the Cape Dutch homestead from 1814. The gardens underwent a restoration in 2001 and are laid out in a formal style with four distinct areas. Visitors can admire various plants, including roses, foxgloves, salvias, and agapanthus, all set against the stunning backdrop of vineyards, pastures, and the Simonsberg Mountain.
Rustenberg also operates its own plant nursery, The Longbarn Nursery, which houses many of the plants found in the gardens. The nursery is where the estate team nurtures seedlings and grows new additions to the garden. Plants are available for purchase by appointment.
The estate is home to abundant wildlife and bird species, including Guinea Fowl, Fish Eagles, Buzzards, and Sunbirds. While much of the wildlife is nocturnal, visitors might spot smaller creatures like Squirrels, Cape Otters, or Mongooses.
