Somerbosch Wines
Winery Description
Location and History
Somerbosch Wines is located at the foothills of the Helderberg Mountain, between the historic towns of Stellenbosch and Somerset West. The farm, initially named Die Fonteine, has been under the stewardship of the Roux family for over half a century. The story began in the 1950s at Uitkyk Farm, where Walter James du Preez Roux, raised on the land, took over from his father. Walter later acquired Die Fonteine Farm in 1960 from his father-in-law, Daniel Mathys de Kock, who had purchased it in 1948 to be close to his children attending school in Stellenbosch.
For years, the farm's grapes were processed into bulk wine until international sanctions against South Africa halted winemaking in 1973. It wasn't until 1995 that Marius and Japie Roux, Walter's youngest sons, revived the winemaking tradition on the farm. By 2000, all grapes grown on the property were into wine under the Somerbosch Wines label, a name chosen to reflect its location midway between Somerset West and Stellenbosch.
Wine Tasting
Somerbosch Wines has established a reputation for producing a diverse portfolio of wines influenced by the cool Atlantic breeze and the farm's unique terroir. Since 1995, the Roux brothers have expertly crafted various red, white, rosé, and MCC wines, including special editions like the Somerbosch Kylix, released only in exceptional vintages. The wines are celebrated for their approachability and quality, appealing to connoisseurs and casual wine drinkers alike.
Visitors to Somerbosch can enjoy three standard tasting options and a signature wine and ice cream pairing experience. Tastings are offered in a serene setting, either in the tasting room or on the patio overlooking the farm's picturesque vineyards and gardens. For a more personalised experience, groups larger than four are encouraged to book in advance.
Restaurant
Somerbosch is also home to a bistro known for its delightful cuisine, overseen by Chef Zenta. The menu blends innovation and tradition, featuring long-standing favourites like crispy roast duck, calamari salad, and homemade strawberry ice cream. Patrons can savour their meals in a cosy indoor setting or al fresco, surrounded by scenic vineyard views. Wine pairings are recommended for each dish, enhancing the dining experience.
The on-site deli offers a variety of homemade and locally sourced goods, such as jams, honey, biscuits, and frozen meals. These items make excellent gifts or souvenirs to take home. Many of these products are also available online through the Somerbosch shop.
