Spioenkop Estate
Winery Description
Location and History
Founded in 2008 by Belgian-born Koen Roose, Spioenkop Wines is in the cool-climate Elgin Valley, surrounded by mountains and nestled on a plateau 200 meters above sea level. Koen, a former sommelier and engineer, searched for the perfect terroir for four years before settling on this unique piece of land. The vineyard benefits from a cooler temperature range, aided by cold sea breezes funnelled through the valley, making it one of the coolest sites in Elgin.
Spioenkop's soils, a mix of weathered Bokkeveld shale, iron-rich ferricrete cobbles, and nutrient-poor clay, contribute to the distinct character of the wines. The vines are densely planted, encouraging competition and resulting in wines with deep colour and complexity. Koen practices low-intervention winemaking, embracing biodynamic principles and organic farming, though without certification. His philosophy centres on maintaining balance in the vineyard, winery, and terroir.
Wine Tasting
The Spioenkop wine range includes signature wines like Riesling, Pinotage, and Chenin Blanc, each reflecting the winemaker's meticulous approach and the unique Elgin terroir. All grapes for creating this range are grown on the farm. The "1900" range features classic Elgin varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, crafted with the same passion and precision, along with a second Pinotage made from non-estate grapes.
