Stettyn Family Vineyards
Winery Description
Location and History
Stettyn Cellar is steeped in a rich history, with the farm's origins tracing back to 1714 when Governor Chavonnes of the Dutch East India Company granted the land to Free Burghers Cloete and Radyn, whose ancestors hailed from the Stettin area in former Prussia. The Cape Dutch homestead, dating to 1777, stands as a National Monument today, the original house occupied by the first permanent settlers. The Botha family acquired the farm in 1818 and has remained in their hands for eight generations. Wine production on the farm has a long tradition, with individual farms producing wine from the late 1800s until the 1950s. Stettyn Cellar was established in 1963, centralising winemaking and significantly improving quality with the first wines produced in 1964. The vineyards of Stettyn, Jonkersrivier, and De Hoek, covering 364 hectares, serve as the primary production sources.
Guided by winemaker JM Crafford, Stettyn Cellar has embraced a "quality first" approach to winemaking, with a focus on innovative techniques. The area's favourable climate, characterised by cold winters and moderate summers, is ideal for producing high-quality grapes, particularly for Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Stettyn Cellar's wines have garnered esteemed awards and glowing reviews, reflecting the dedication and craftsmanship of its small team of wine farmers.
