That Wine Demesne

Winery Description

Location and History

Near the small coastal town of Plettenberg Bay, in an area known as The Crags, lies a small wine farm called That Wine Demesne. Nestled in a secluded corner, cooled by mist and sea breezes channelled through the gorges of The Crags, this estate is home to vineyards and two self-catering cottages. Planted on 1.5 hectares, the Pinot Noir vines dig deep into stone and clay, producing a distinctive wine: That Wine Demesne.

The journey of That Wine Demesne began in December 2012 during a daily walk with the dogs, wine glass in hand. Inspired by the neighbouring Bramon Wine Estate, David proposed cultivating a small vineyard. Following an enlightening dinner with the Thorpes, they decided to venture into winemaking, choosing Pinot Noir as their cultivar. Whether brave or audacious, they plunged headlong into viticulture, planted the vines, and That Wine Demesne was established.

Wine Tasting

That Wine Demesne is dedicated exclusively to producing Pinot Noir. Although there is currently no public Tasting Room, the farm offers two comfortable, pet-friendly self-catering cottages for couples and families. Wine is sold at the BDJ Café, just 400 m from the farm, where wine tasting of our wine also takes place.

The vineyard produces a single variety of Pinot Noir, characterized by its lustrous garnet red colour and primary aromas of black cherry and strawberry, with subtle hints of truffle and caramel. Gentle ageing in French Oak barrels imparts a complex, delicate structure with moderate tannins and a lingering finish.
The 2018 vintage of That Wine Demesne was awarded Gold at the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards in 2020, and the 2020 vintage received Gold at the Gilbert & Gaillard International blind tasting awards.
