Upland Organic Estate
Winery Description
Location and History
Upland Organic Estate, nestled on the outskirts of Wellington in the Cape Winelands, is a small, family-run farm cradled by the Hawequa mountain range. Established in 1990, Upland has been dedicated to organic farming under the stewardship of Dr Edmund Oettlé and his wife, Elsie, for over 27 years. The estate is known for its commitment to sustainable farming practices, utilising natural fertilisers and pest control to maintain ecological balance. The farm’s location, with its gentle slopes and proximity to the fast-flowing Spruit River, provides an ideal environment for organic vineyards, fruit trees, and indigenous fynbos, fostering a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna.
Upland has garnered a reputation for producing award-winning organic Brandy, Grappa, Port, and Wines, all certified by Ecocert. The estate’s organic grapes, with their small, loose berries and high skin-to-juice ratio, yield wines with greater extraction and flavour than conventional varieties. The dedication to organic methods has enriched the soil, reflected in the robust character of their wines. All Upland products are sulphite-free and vegan, embodying traditional winemaking methods free from chemical and animal product additions.
