Vrede en Lust
Winery Description
Location and History
Nestled at the base of the Simonsberg Mountain in the renowned Franschhoek wine valley, the estate's history dates back to 1688. The land was initially granted to Flemish merchant Jacques de Savoye, who fled Europe due to religious persecution. The estate is believed to have hosted the first Sunday trading in the Cape colony because the first Protestant church was established on its grounds. Over the years, the farm has had various owners but has consistently remained a wine-producing estate, with the current vineyards reflecting plantings from 1745.
In 1996, the Buys family acquired Vrede en Lust, ushering in a new era. The family embarked on a restoration project to return the estate's historic buildings to their original splendour. Today, Vrede en Lust features a modern 750-ton wine cellar, a vibrant tasting room, 100 hectares of vineyards, Lust Bistro & Bakery, a 21-room accommodation and conference facility, and a historic wedding venue with beautiful gardens.
Wine Tasting
Visitors can enjoy two hosted wine-tasting experiences and food and wine pairing options featuring cheese or Lindt chocolate. The estate's professional and knowledgeable tasting ambassadors, known as the Red Ladies, guide guests through the range of wines, while they take in the panoramic views of the Simonsberg and Paarl mountains.
Large groups of up to 26 people can be accommodated for tastings, though restrictions apply during December and weekends between October 1st and May 31st. Pre-booking is required for large groups and the food pairing options.
Restaurant
Lust Bistro & Bakery is open for early breakfast, lunch, and other meals throughout the day, offering delicious food emphasising simplicity and seasonal ingredients. The décor blends modern and earthy elements, creating an industrial loft that meets the farmhouse kitchen ambience. There is also a safe outdoor play area for children, next to the estate's beautiful gardens.
Guests can choose from an à la carte menu, daily blackboard specials, or fresh items from the bakery counter. Menu items range from build-your-own traditional farm breakfasts, eggs Benedict, and blueberry crumpets to salads, pasta, pizzas, and fishcakes for lunch. A children's menu and a wide selection of soft drinks, beers, and coffees are also available.
Set in the Manor House garden amongst ancient oaks and scampering squirrels, Savoye is a restaurant that caters for relaxing lunches, special dinners shared amongst friends and provides the perfect venue for celebrations.
