Welgesind Wine Farm
Winery Description
Location and History
Welgesind Cellar is the newest member of the Stanford Wine Route. Chris and Amanda de Wit own and run the farm with a small team of workers. Chris grew up in Hermanus, and his father was the principal at Okkie Smuts Primary in Stanford. After about 30 years in Pretoria, they handed the transport business to their sons to return to Stanford, where they bought Welgesind as a retirement project. They have made it their mission to clear alien vegetation, like black wattle, on the farm in favour of the indigenous fynbos. They also scattered the cuttings of fynbos obtained from a company that exports fynbos bunches to assist with the revegetation process.
Wine Tasting
The first vineyards were planted in 2011. The grapes are hand-picked and wines are crafted in the charming cellar below Chris and Amanda’s house, where everything from fermentation to bottling and labelling is done. The main grapes on the farm are Shiraz, from which they produce the Welgesind Mechanic and the Directors Reserve Shiraz. Welgesind makes a Shiraz Rosé called Romanse (Afrikaans for Romance) because it was first bottled on Valentine’s Day, and a Sauvignon Blanc called De Wit. Malbec was also planted, and the first wine from Malbec will be certified in 2024.
The owners of Welgesind offer wine tasting in the tasting room next to the cellar. They will taste with you and answer any questions you might have about winemaking. It’s a genuinely personal and unique experience. Please get in touch with them directly to make an appointment for wine tasting
